They have various challenges, and then at the end of each day, two artists go up for elimination. For each elimination, they each draw a word out of a basket, then they have 90 minutes to make a comic the combines both words.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">People have started playing a "home game" where they pause the video as soon as the two words are revealed then attempt the same thing the contestants have to do. I gave it a shot with Elimination #6, where the words were:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">MYSTERY</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">NAUGHTY</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Just drew the first thing that popped into my head. I finished in 82 minutes. Only had pencil, ball-point pen, and white-board markers handy..</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

He hands me a joystick and tells me that this is a tele-presence device connected to a similar unit on one of the prison worlds. People on the other side can see and hear me, and I can even move the remote terminal around with my joystick.<br /><br />"But there are hundreds of prison worlds!" I protest. "Is this the one my dad is on?"<br /><br />The alien ignores me and walks away.<br /><br />I turn to the device. I see a dimly-lit cave. Everyone there wears parkas and anoraks. They seem oddly full of energy. Rather than moping in agony, they're constantly darting to and fro. I drive the remote terminal around and try asking about my father, but hardly anyone stops long enough to even let me finish my question. The ones who hear me just shrug and move on.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">There are probably millions of people here. How the hell am I supposed to find my dad just by walking around?!</span><br /><br />Eventually, I catch the eye of one man who turns to me and stops running. He nervously scans the area. That's his serial number!"<br /><br />I want to ask him how he knows me, and if he knows where I should look, but a mob of people rushes between us, and they sweep him away, toward a railing.<br /><br />I hear a splash.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;"><b>Continued in </b><a href="http://toasty-doodle.blogspot.com/2010/06/round-up-dream-part-3.html"><b>Part 3</b></a><br /></span>ToastyKenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03046500121236049524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8094259709287928572.post-30728216281548941422010-06-15T03:25:00.000-07:002010-06-18T04:10:26.070-07:00"Round-up", a dream, Part 1<span style="font-style: italic;">Part 1 • </span><a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://toasty-doodle.blogspot.com/2010/06/round-up-dream-part-2.html">Part 2</a><span style="font-style: italic;"> • </span><a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://toasty-doodle.blogspot.com/2010/06/round-up-dream-part-3.html"><span>Part 3</span></a> • <a href="http://toasty-doodle.blogspot.com/2010/06/round-up-dream-part-4.html"><span style="font-style: italic;">Part 4</span></a><br /><span style="font-style: italic;"><br />An actual dream I had last month (with minor embellishments):</span><br /><br />The world has been taken over by aliens. They've already rounded up most of the people in the world and sent them off to hellish prison worlds. They come for us one at a time. They'll leave you to conduct your own affairs in peace until the day they suddenly come for you (or until the day you foolishly try to fight back).<br /><br />I was away when they landed, camping in Yosemite, and I just managed to make my way back to San Francisco. I find my mother in tears; they took my dad a few days ago.<br /><br />I've got to find him! I've got to see him again, one last time, at least. But where is he? They get seeded on rain forest trees and start growing up to get light and down to get roots. They wrap themselves around the tree and sometimes end up killing it by depriving it of nutrients. Dead trees rot away, leaving <a href="http://www.flickr.com/search/?ss=2&w=all&q=hollow+strangler+fig&m=text">a hollow center</a> in the shape of the tree, with only the strangler fig remaining.<br /><br />This immediately made me imagine a strangler fig doing this to a person, leaving behind only a shell in the shape of the person. A travel companion pointed out that the person would have to sit still for a pretty long time... But then he suggested that maybe this could happen to one of those monks who go out into the wilderness and just sit meditating in the lotus position until they die.<br /><br />So of course I had to sketch this idea...<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwKMDKRVZLzXG4pOUQxXNyGxFzIwtbTTZA5EVlbAvg4_NdTJVwwX3VtTUiEBjchhKP_-ZIMl7waFApVTYB4GpGGFvaSrj5QZzmyCdnu9zfr0WXfu2V-gIOlGF4SireqzoZTl2CP4-jxNOWbhQ/s1600/2009-11-22-strangler-fig.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 402px; height: 576px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwKMDKRVZLzXG4pOUQxXNyGxFzIwtbTTZA5EVlbAvg4_NdTJVwwX3VtTUiEBjchhKP_-ZIMl7waFApVTYB4GpGGFvaSrj5QZzmyCdnu9zfr0WXfu2V-gIOlGF4SireqzoZTl2CP4-jxNOWbhQ/s576/2009-11-22-strangler-fig.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5409671400624495506" border="0" /></a><br />P.S.: These hollow constructs often serve as homes for various critters, and I figured I'd add that to my sketch, too...ToastyKenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03046500121236049524noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8094259709287928572.post-7488108838876998772009-11-29T14:57:00.000-08:002009-11-29T15:33:13.782-08:00Leaves at a hotel in Costa Rica<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI0_cORw5rgzRc8zD6iVeMI_gVFeq3WyC6LgdZbjYTOBKhwjuA04_kZzqScTyghkpDirsssGsPoTr4oDd75rxjok_npzvtetcP2DTbdS8E06GJg32FzhGfxD4h8eoPeMuEQbj1-L5y9I6S_aM/s1600/2009-11-21-leaves.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 389px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI0_cORw5rgzRc8zD6iVeMI_gVFeq3WyC6LgdZbjYTOBKhwjuA04_kZzqScTyghkpDirsssGsPoTr4oDd75rxjok_npzvtetcP2DTbdS8E06GJg32FzhGfxD4h8eoPeMuEQbj1-L5y9I6S_aM/s400/2009-11-21-leaves.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5409663815815082082" border="0" /></a><br />Leaves at my hotel (Arenal Observatory Lodge) in Costa RicaToastyKenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03046500121236049524noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8094259709287928572.post-76596131010482759852009-08-30T02:40:00.000-07:002009-08-30T02:55:38.172-07:00Batman Beyond Villain KenOkay so to compensate for <a href="http://toasty-doodle.blogspot.com/2009/08/on-ken.html">my self-emasculation yesterday</a>, here's a buffed up version of me, based on <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHGeSq6zryiYkMcCX1GpfPYujPvmqCgv06NLS093yU9oM2yz44OmuDWoy41K4KGlzWljZ0e69wPKynGqV0aStfiEBO5VVam59Mw4TA3-7ho80y5eCdQgkcfeV951d-eXIibz0leT5viHLG-2g/s1600-h/batman-beyond-brain-trust.jpg">this freeze-frame of a villain in a Batman Beyond episode</a>.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpntCfuMV5PmGwxvWuHweg1DrjNuDY3oIENpyJ5pU4t3QgfjSp34a9IDLO54Rh3eHFBbpp97vfWtxwzH5__JIZurneCaqPnBKjfw42zND9Mr1BMHAfpBOrEq9WS5znseF-dMsk305f8SeoDbk/s1600-h/2009-08-29-batken.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 358px; height: 576px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpntCfuMV5PmGwxvWuHweg1DrjNuDY3oIENpyJ5pU4t3QgfjSp34a9IDLO54Rh3eHFBbpp97vfWtxwzH5__JIZurneCaqPnBKjfw42zND9Mr1BMHAfpBOrEq9WS5znseF-dMsk305f8SeoDbk/s576/2009-08-29-batken.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375692967648968082" border="0" /></a><br />I colored it in Photoshop after scanning in the line art.ToastyKenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03046500121236049524noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8094259709287928572.post-20853318995963702882009-08-29T03:32:00.001-07:002009-08-30T02:57:14.217-07:00Æon KenI finally got around to Netflixing the early 90s MTV animated series Æon Flux. It's awesome! It's the most "holy crap how did I not see this until now" show since Freaks and Geeks. Minimalist, avant-garde science fiction that tosses aside everything non-essential and just focuses on one interesting idea each episode. I've been playing a (free) indie puzzler/platformer game called <a href="http://runhello.com/">Jumpman</a>. I <a href="http://subjunctive.net/klog/2009/02/jumpman_a_nifty_indi/">wrote a blog post about it here</a>. The game has a level editor, and I made a few levels that are inspired by some classics. I figure this did involve some "drawing", no? This counts as art, no? :) Anyway, see my blog post for more thoughts about the game, a download link for my levels.ToastyKenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03046500121236049524noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8094259709287928572.post-3175222821697471362009-02-26T02:48:00.000-08:002009-02-26T02:51:51.775-08:00Day 40: "Beach Closed Today"<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBMWr3xRFFiMUqPDMGhqfFcpflJbYr-J7lU_HgAvIcPtCD10fEnl2lZQ4Dd-6Jat_Wqy4vitm6mzK9_N-n4Cp0Q9lEMdfi-8qUciqxT0uPWqxfozmj1FoV1UPnJnm1GvwZ_FRhrBBtIK-25eM/s1600-h/2009-02-25-Shark+Sighting.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 576px; height: 328px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBMWr3xRFFiMUqPDMGhqfFcpflJbYr-J7lU_HgAvIcPtCD10fEnl2lZQ4Dd-6Jat_Wqy4vitm6mzK9_N-n4Cp0Q9lEMdfi-8qUciqxT0uPWqxfozmj1FoV1UPnJnm1GvwZ_FRhrBBtIK-25eM/s576/2009-02-25-Shark+Sighting.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307056401319839778" border="0" /></a>Based on <a href="http://new-brunswick.net/new-brunswick/sharks/clinemarine.html">this photo</a> I found by doing an image search for "shark sighting".<br /><br />I'm trying to learn to draw waves.
